Kevin Federline is sharing deeply personal reflections about his past with Britney Spears in his forthcoming memoir, You Thought You Knew, which includes new claims about the singer’s mental health and her relationship with their children.

In excerpts obtained by The New York Times on Tuesday (Oct. 14), Federline writes that he worries for Spears’ well-being and questions whether ending her conservatorship in 2021 was the right decision. “It feels like this situation is moving toward something irreversible,” he says, adding that he fears their sons may ultimately “be left to pick up the pieces.”

Federline, who was married to Spears from 2004 to 2007, shares two sons with the pop star — 20-year-old Sean and 19-year-old Jayden. In the book, he also makes disturbing allegations about Spears’ past behavior, describing incidents he claims occurred when their children were young.

A representative for Spears has strongly denied Federline’s statements, criticizing him for “profiting off Britney” now that child support payments have ended. The rep emphasized that Spears’ focus remains on her sons’ happiness and well-being, pointing to her own memoir, The Woman in Me, which shares her side of the story.

Set for release on Oct. 21You Thought You Knew is being described as Federline’s most candid project to date. He will reportedly discuss the book further in an exclusive televised interview with Entertainment Tonight. In the preview clip, he insists his intentions are not malicious but protective, saying he felt compelled to “sound the alarm” about Spears’ ongoing struggles.

Federline adds that his priority has always been helping his sons maintain a healthy relationship with their mother: “My kids don’t know the woman I married,” he writes. “For twenty years, I’ve tried to bridge that gap.”

Spears, meanwhile, has recently shared updates about reconnecting with her sons. Last Christmas, she posted an emotional message celebrating time spent with Jayden, writing that it was the “best Christmas” of her life after years apart.
