James C. Schmidt Named Seventh President of JMU

James C. Schmidt

James C. Schmidt has been appointed as the seventh president of James Madison University, announced during a special Board of Visitors meeting at Wilson Hall last week. Schmidt, who previously served as the chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, brings over 30 years of experience in higher education to his new role.

A Warm Welcome to the JMU Community

Dressed in a purple tie in honor of JMU’s school colors, Schmidt expressed his excitement about joining the university. Speaking to a packed auditorium of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, he emphasized his enthusiasm for JMU’s strong school spirit, academic excellence, and athletic achievements.

“Today is an important day for me and my family, and I hope it becomes a great day for JMU as we map out this next step together,” Schmidt said. He added that he looks forward to working closely with the JMU community, learning from them, and supporting the university’s continued growth.

Background and Vision for JMU

During his tenure at UW-Eau Claire, Schmidt played a key role in securing a historic $70 million donation for an indoor athletics facility and event center. He highlighted JMU’s expanding culture of philanthropy as an area he is eager to strengthen in his new leadership role.

His appointment follows a year-long search to replace former president Jonathan Alger, who left to assume the same position at American University in Washington, D.C. Charlie King served as interim president throughout the selection process.

Interim President King welcomed Schmidt, stating, “It is an honor to welcome Jim into the JMU community. I take great pride in this institution and will do everything I can to support the board and our new president during this transition.”

Kay Coles James, chair of the presidential search committee, praised Schmidt’s leadership style and alignment with JMU’s values. “Jim Schmidt’s commitment to JMU’s values, bold vision-casting, student-centered outlook, and his community-building experience will be invaluable assets to lead JMU boldly into the future,” she said.

A People-First Approach

Schmidt shared that his decision to join JMU was deeply influenced by the students he met during campus visits earlier this year. He sees his role as president as being the university’s lead storyteller, sharing the experiences and successes of the JMU community.

“My interactions with this campus were amazing. They stole my heart, and today has only been more special,” he said, reflecting on the energy and warm welcome he received.

As he prepares to officially step into the role on July 1, Schmidt emphasized his first priority: building relationships and understanding JMU’s culture. He is committed to transparency in his leadership, ensuring that students, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders are engaged in shaping the university’s future.
