During his concert on Saturday night, June 14, Cody Johnson paused his usual performance to address the No Kings rallies happening across the United States that day.
Known for sharing heartfelt messages about patriotism and support for the military during his shows, Johnson spoke to the audience about the division he had noticed in the news.
He said, “All I’ve seen is division,” pointing out that people have been divided over politics, race, policies, religion, and foreign affairs. However, he emphasized that at his concert, the focus would be on unity.
He asked the crowd if they understood why it’s acceptable in America to have differing opinions and lifestyles. His answer was that American soldiers sacrificed their lives to protect the right to these differences and freedoms.
Despite this message of unity, Johnson also made clear that he does not always agree with the opinions expressed by others, particularly regarding recent protests against former President Trump’s policies. He acknowledged that what he was about to say might be controversial but used the opportunity to voice his disagreement with the protests. Inviting his audience to join him, Johnson stated, “Tonight, we are going to protest the protests.”
He then performed “God Bless America” asking the men in the crowd to remove their hats as a sign of respect.
