The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA is joining the nationwide “Empty the Shelters” campaign, an initiative by the BISSELL Pet Foundation, by offering discounted adoption fees through July 19 in response to a growing overcrowding problem.
During the campaign, adoption fees for dogs, cats, and kittens are $70 or less, with costs covered by the BISSELL Pet Foundation. The RHSPCA is one of over 300 animal shelters across 40 states participating in the effort — the largest of its kind in the U.S.
The shelter is currently at capacity, especially as summer brings a surge in animal births.
The organization reports housing more than 140 dogs and over 300 cats and kittens. The peak of kitten season has added to the strain, prompting the shelter to remind residents to spay or neuter outdoor cats when possible.
Adoption hours at the RHSPCA, located at 2170 Old Furnace Road, run Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended evening hours until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
