Sabrina Carpenter says many of her best song ideas arrive just as she’s drifting off to sleep.

In a new interview with Interview Magazine, the Espresso singer explained that she recorded her latest album, Man’s Best Friend, across three different cities—Los Angeles, London, and New York—and that each setting shaped the record’s sound. “They all inspired me in such different ways,” she shared. “That’s a huge reason why the album sounds the way it does.”

Carpenter admitted her most creative bursts often come at night. “Unfortunately, it’s usually right as I’m about to fall asleep that I think of most of my ideas,” she said, laughing about times she’s secretly recorded voice memos while a friend snored next to her. Inspiration, she added, can also strike in more random places like the car or even the shower.

The pop star revealed she felt especially inspired while working in London with collaborators Jack Antonoff, John Ryan, and Amy Allen“It was just the four of us and a lot of fireplaces,” she recalled. “There was a constant smell of smoke in the air and I was in a really delirious state—but so much of the music ended up being exactly how I felt.”

Man’s Best Friend was released in late August, marking her follow-up to 2024’s Short n’ Sweet.
