The City of Harrisonburg has launched a community survey to gather public input as it searches for a new police chief. The survey, which opened Tuesday, invites residents to share what qualities and priorities they believe the city’s next law enforcement leader should have.

Mike Parks, Harrisonburg’s director of communications and public engagement, said the city wants someone who is both a strong leader and deeply connected to the community. “This is a very active role in our community,” Parks explained. “The trust between a police department and the community they serve is vital.”

This marks the second time the city has sought public feedback during the hiring process for a police chief. Parks noted that the previous survey helped guide former Chief Kelley Warner, who resigned in June 2024, to align with community expectations when she took office.

The survey will close November 12, and city officials hope to extend an offer for the position by early 2026Deputy Chief Rod Pollard is currently serving as interim chief in the meantime.
