Don’t Let Your Pipes Freeze: Winter Tips from Local Experts

As temperatures drop and cold nights become more frequent, plumbing experts are urging homeowners to take precautions to prevent frozen or burst pipes.

Samantha Vailes McCray, Service Manager at Vailes Professional Remodeling, Plumbing, Heating, and Air, emphasized the importance of disconnecting and storing outdoor hoses before freezing weather sets in. “That’s one of the main causes of pipes that burst,” she explained.

During extended cold spells, Vailes McCray recommends leaving faucets dripping slightly and opening cabinet doorsunder sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing.

If a pipe does freeze and burst, she said, the first step is to shut off the home’s main water supply and contact a professional plumber immediately.

The American Red Cross also advises keeping your thermostat set to a consistent temperature day and night and closing garage doors if water lines run through the area. For frozen pipes, apply gentle heat until water flow returns — but if the pipe is inaccessible or you’re unable to thaw it, call a licensed plumber for help.
