The Scripps National Spelling Bee is just one week away! Merriam-Webster worked together with some linguists to find out the most difficult words from the competition over the past 10 years.
They found that classic languages caused the most trouble for the spelling contestants. Also words that have Greek and Latin roots tripped up students the most. Some other words that were problematic were German, French and Italian-based.
According to Merriam-Webster and some linguists the hardest words to spell are Bondieuserie [bohn-dyooz-ree], Schefflera [SCHEF-luh-ra] and Cipollino [chip-oh-LEE-no]. I'm going to be honest with you... even with the phonetic spelling of these words I still can't pronounce them.
If you want to watch the Spelling Bee next week it starts on Thursday, May 30th on ESPN 2!
