JMU's Mark Byington Rumored to be Vanderbilt’s New Head Coach

Vanderbilt University is poised to bring aboard Mark Byington, the current head coach of James Madison University, as their new men's basketball coach. Byington recently orchestrated an impressive season for the Dukes. Under his leadership, James Madison achieved a remarkable 32-4 record in the 2023-24 season. Notably, they secured a momentous victory over No. 5-seeded Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament, marking the program's first triumph in the Big Dance since 1983.

James Madison University concluded the regular season with an impressive 31-3 record and clinched the Sun Belt Tournament championship. Their stellar performance earned them a 12-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes kicked off the season with a memorable upset victory against Michigan State and soared to No. 18 in the AP Top 25 Poll after an undefeated 14-0 start.

During his tenure at James Madison, Coach Byington achieved an overall record of 82 wins and 36 losses. Within conference play, he led the Dukes to a commendable 41-23 record. Notably, in his inaugural season at the helm, Byington guided the team to a share of the CAA regular-season championship . His impact on the program has been significant, and Vanderbilt’s decision to bring him aboard reflects their commitment to elevating their men’s basketball program.

Now, Byington steps into the role previously occupied by Jerry Stackhouse, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month. Stackhouse's five-season stint at the helm resulted in a record of 70 wins and 92 losses.
